Commedia Pied Piper with the Tarradiddle Players
June 24- 27 10:30 a.m.
Film Theatre
In 1842, Robert Browning wrote a beautiful poem about the legend of a mysterious piper who used his mesmerizing music to rid a town of rats. But when the greedy town leaders refused to pay the piper for his services, he used the same skill to lure away all the town’s children. This is not that story. Well, not exactly that story. Told in the zany slapstick style of Commedia dell’arte, this is the Pied Piper of Hamelin like you have never seen him before. The show is free to general admission ticket holders and Friends of Elizabeth II. All guests must have a ticket. Friends of Elizabeth II may pick up tickets in advance at the Park’s Visitor Center during the hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., or call in advance to reserve the tickets. Open Dream Ensemble Presents The Red Planet
July 29- August 1 at 10:30 a.m.
Film Theatre
The year is 2158 and Earth’s first community on Mars is three years old. Comprised of people from around the world, it is starting to thrive. And now the new "global community" is about to make history. Studio Broadcast Mars is bustling with excitement. Built into the side of the volcano Olympus Mons, this studio chronicles Mars' scientific and artistic culture. Today, for the very first time, the studio will offer Earth a chance to see what life is like on the Red Planet. Pete Flick, head broadcaster, has been working with his friends to create a fantastic transmission. They’ve put together a program focusing on the people who have made life on Mars a reality. In addition to illustrating the challenges of adapting to an unfamiliar environment, the broadcast will feature live music by the Martian colony’s first band and a comedy about the adventures and misadventures of a Martian child. At first, everything in the broadcast proceeds as planned -- but then something goes terribly wrong. Despite the mishap, Pete is determined that the show must go on. Using the skills and talents of his friends, Pete thinks on his feet, looking back into Earth’s broadcast history to discover a creative way to make this first Red Planet broadcast a roaring success. All guests must have a ticket. Friends of Elizabeth II may pick up tickets in advance at the Park’s Visitor Center during the hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., or call in advance to reserve the tickets. Don’t let the holiday spirit fade! On Saturday, December 27, come join in the fun as Roanoke Island Festival Park celebrates the third day of Christmas. Visitors to the Park can get a taste of 16th century holiday traditions from 12:00 to 5:00 as they make decorations, learn special dances, sing songs, discover food and drink of the season, and indulge in merriment with members of the Guild of St. Andrew. Many events will be held inside and the celebration will go on, rain or shine.
In the Settlement Site visitors can join with the interpreters as they “recreate” their celebration in the American wilderness, with simple decorations and a roast over the open fire.
